Joseph McGee received both a B.A. and an L.L.B. from Washington and Lee University. Following graduation he entered the United States Navy Officer Canidate School and was commissioned an Ensign. He served forty months incuding two years aboard the USS Wasp as ship's intelligence officer. He has served in the South Carolina House of Representatives and on the Charleston City Council and was chairman of the Executive Committee of the South Carolina Bar in 1971. A past president of the Charleston County Bar Association and the Historic Charleston Foundation, he is trustee emeritus of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Mr. McGee was the recipient of the DuRant Distinguished Public Service Award in 2003. The DuRant Award, given by the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Bar Foundation, is considered the most prestigious statewide recognition that is bestowed upon an attorney. Mr. McGee is also a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and is listed in The Best Lawyers In America. Now partially retired and no longer active in first chair litigation, he practices mostly in trust and estates and elder law.
